Top Wellness Trends for 2022

Looking ahead to next year, we see several trends shaping the way consumers influence the wellness industry. Here are the top wellness trends for 2022.

1. Growth of immunity-Boosting products. The rise of immune boosting products is no surprise given the worldwide pandemic. Brands such as Life Extension offer mixes containing a high-potency vitamin, mineral, fruit and vegetable supplement packed with nutrients to maintain whole-body health and longevity. The bioactive quercetin phytosome in this particular supplement promotes healthy immune function and supports cardiovascular and endothelial health. It also helps inhibit oxidative and inflammatory factors to support immune health.

Additionally, while supplies last, MyWellnesstar is giving away ZAND Elderberry & Zinc Immunity Gummies. These Daily Defense gummies are best-sellers for a reason: elderberry, zinc and vitamin C work together to keep you and your whole family going. Ingredients: Vitamin C, Zinc, Elderberry, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Cane Sugar, Water, Pectin, Sodium Citrate, Natural Flavors, Citric Acid, Coconut Oil and Carnauba Wax. Learn more here.

Of course, as we wrote about in a previous post, The best way to get over being sick is to continuously prevent bacteria, viruses, and pathogens from breaking through your body’s defense system in the first place. We also shared top strategies to prevent illness and boost your immune system such as getting adequate sleep, hydration, regular exercise, maintaining gut health, and bridging nutrition gaps with vitamins and supplements as ways of boosting your immunity.

2. Mental health is making progress. In a previous post, we shared trends in mental health, including the Impact of COVID-19 on adults struggling with mental health issues.  Of over 1.5 million people who took a MHA Screening from January to September 2020, thoughts of suicide and self-harm are the highest ever recorded since the MHA Screening program launch in 2014. 37 percent of people reported having suicidal ideations more than half or nearly every day in September 2020.

Loneliness or isolation are the top issues contributing to those struggling with mental health. From April to September 2020, among those who screened with moderate to severe symptoms of anxiety or depression, 70 percent reported that one of the top three things contributing to their mental health concerns was loneliness or isolation.

Since then, many high profile public figures have become more open about their struggles with depression and anxiety, helping to erode the stigma and potentially encouraging others to speak up about their challenges. Additionally, licensed therapists have utilized social media platforms including Tik Tok to educate younger generations about mental health and to encourage those suffering to talk openly about their symptoms. Many are becoming more comfortable asking for help and making space in their life to address important mental health issues by going to therapy, coaching, or taking a day off work.

3. Tapping technology to aid in self-enlightenment. With abundant access to data-monitoring technology, consumers are taking their personal wellness into their own hands, monitoring steps, heart rate, water intake, exercise and more.

The more technology continues to evolve, the more empowered today’s health conscious customers will continue to flourish.

4. Embracing products to boost emotional well-being. With stress and feelings of isolation at record highs following a year and a half pandemic, people of all ages are seeking multiple forms of stress and trauma relief.

Brands are emerging within the natural and alternative food markets, offering  remedies intended to be beneficial during traumatic or stressful situations. Examples include a light box to improve mood, energy and sleep patterns; and a meditation headband offering real-time brainwave feedback.

Other ways to alleviate stress in the body include relaxing scents, essential oils, and candles. From March to December 2020, candles and home fragrance products realized double-digit dollar gains, according to NPD (formerly National Purchase Diary Panel), an American market research company.

Consumer interest in products containing adaptogens — herbs and mushrooms purported to support a body’s natural ability to deal with stress — rose 55% in 2020 and online conversations around adaptogens increased eightfold, according to Spoonshot.

Supplements with ashwagandha, for example, saw a 3,995% increase in sales in the U.S. sleep-support category for the 52 weeks ending November 29, 2020, according to SPINS data and are considered nearly mainstream.

Products on the rise include those containing holy basil, reishi, maca, ginseng and turmeric

5. Seeking renewal and restoration. Consumers are purchasing products to renew, repair and replenish their physical and mental self. Emerging products are helping to regulate the body’s circadian rhythm to help people get a better night’s sleep, so their bodies can renew and replenish overnight.

Examples include overnight “cell renewal” supplements with ceramides, overnight fat-burners, acne cures and hair-growth remedies; and natural sleep aids to support a person’s natural sleep cycle.

Brain boosting supplements offer aim to restore mental balance and clarity for consumers of all ages. For example, the blueberry erxtract in Life Extension Mix Capsules contains anthocyanins that help inhibit free radicals, while blueberry's other active constituents promote healthy lipid and glucose levels for those already within the normal range. Even more exciting: these blueberry constituents may help protect DNA structure and promote healthy cellular proliferation.

In clinical studies, blueberries have been shown to inhibit inflammatory factors and have antioxidant benefits to support a healthy immune system and encourage healthy cognitive function.
