Exploring Energy Medicine

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, Energy Medicine is in the category of complementary therapies involving the use of various types of energy fields with the goal to bring energy into the patient or balance the energy within a patient. Read on to learn more about the definition, types, and benefits of this powerful therapy.

What is Energy Medicine

Energy Medicine is a field of complementary therapy based on the interactions of the human energy field with other energy fields (human or other). The human body is surrounded by and emits various kinds of energy: electrical, magnetic, light, and subtle. Health and disease appear to be related to the flow or lack of flow of our energetic systems.

Energy Medicine aims to restore homeostasis in the body through techniques from time-honored traditions such as acupuncture, yoga, kinesiology, and qi gong. Flow, balance, and harmony can be  non-invasively restored and maintained within an energy system by tapping, massaging, pinching, twisting, or connecting specific energy points (acupoints) on the skin; by tracing or swirling the hand over the skin along specific energy pathways; through exercises or postures designed for specific energetic effects; by focused use of the mind to move specific energies; and/or by surrounding an area with healing energies.

Types of Energy Healing

Therapeutic touch, healing touch, Reiki are probably the most commonly used energy healing modalities, and all of these involve a practitioner who assesses the client’s energy field and then rebalances it using a variety of techniques.

A form of Energy Medicine has been used for many years in orthopedics for healing nonunion fractures: the pulsed electromagnetic field. This device creates an external magnetic field that induces an electrical current in bone that has a similar waveform as the piezoelectric current induced in bone with mechanical stimulation.

Data also support the emission of a biomagnetic field from the hands of therapeutic touch and  qi gong practitioners. These fields are similar in magnitude and quality to pulsated electromagnetic fields that have been used to heal chronic nonunion fractures. There is also evidence for the use of energy medicine in ligament and tendon injuries and for wound healing.

The Need for Energy Medicine

To maintain vibrant health, the body needs energy to:

  • Move and have space to continue to move—energies may become blocked due to toxins, muscular or other constriction, prolonged stress, or interference from other energies.
  • Move in specific patterns—generally in harmony with the physical structures and functions that the energies animate and support.
  • Maintain a balance with other energies—the energies may lose their natural balance due to prolonged stress or other conditions that keep specific energy systems in a survival mode.
  • Conversely, when the body is not healthy, corresponding disturbances in its energies can be identified and treated.

Energy Medicine & Spirituality

Entering the world of your body's subtle energies is a bridge into the domain of your deepest spiritual callings and your eternal essence. While no particular belief system, allegiance, or religious affiliation is associated with Energy Medicine, many people find that energy work touches into the realms of soul and spirit.
