Low Grade Tidying: Does It Really Boost Your Mood?

The short answer is yes! Tidying your house can reduce stress and provide other mental health benefits. In fact, studies have shown more chaotic, cluttered environments may create time management problems which cause other nerve-racking issues, and increase cortisol, a.k.a the stress hormone. Read on for all of the benefits and learn some tips for getting started on tidying your home.

Stress Management

If you’re having trouble getting started, one of our stress management tips may help you get the ball rolling. If you simply cannot find time, don’t be afraid to ask for help. We are not an island and we are not meant to do things alone! If you look at our ancestors, their activities of daily life revolved around community. If you’re running your own business maybe you hire a consultant to come in and organize your closet or pantry for you.

Eliminating Clutter

Speaking of consultants, Japanese organizing guru Marie Kondo shares The KonMari Method™, which encourages tidying by category – not by location – beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and, finally, sentimental items. She urges us to keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. People around the world have been drawn to this philosophy not only due to its effectiveness, but also because it places great importance on being mindful, introspective and forward-looking.

Tidying vs. Cleaning

Note: tidying is not the same as cleaning. Tidying ensures each of your belongings has it’s own spot. It makes transitioning to other activities of daily life more smooth as you can easily find things when they are placed back in their appropriate spaces. Once you’ve tidied, cleaning is easier to accomplish as each of your items are already where they belong and out of your way. Cleaning can then be an almost meditative act as your hands set to work clearing dirt and debris.

Increasing Mindfulness

The act of mindfully cleaning can therapeutically release negative thoughts and emotions. You can also clean while listening to music or a podcast to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. When you’re finished, you’ll find it’s easier to relax and feel calm in an organized, clean space.

Explore Storage Solutions

Sometimes the best way to organize cluttered spaces such as the fridge or pantry is with the right storage containers. Whether you’re storing baking supplies, utensils, snacks, composting, or switching from plastic to eco-friendly shopping bags, keeping food and supplies properly stored in designated areas will help ensure your time in the kitchen is enjoyable and stress-free.
