Wellness Trip Ideas to Inspire Your Next Healthy Getaway

As we welcome and embrace a new year, many look to take a restorative trip or retreat to kick things off in a healthy way. Here are a few ideas for your next restorative healthy getaway.

Yoga Retreat

Taking precious vacation days for a yoga retreat to connect with nature and disconnect from technology can have lasting restorative effects on your mental, physical, and spiritual health. So much of the last year has been stressful, filled with negative messages and chaotic disruption of daily live. By surrounding yourself with positive energy, you can heal previous traumas and move forward with a more centered energy. Finally, taking this time for yourself allows you to slow down and bring mindfulness to your mind and body.

Spa Weekend

Not only does a spa day or weekend help to reduce stress, it serves to revive parts of our bodies suffering from the effects of winter. Massages, facials, and other anti-aging skin treatments help make skin more radiant, smoothing skin, reducing headaches, and relieving pain. Relaxing for a day or a weekend will also enhance sleep and release serotonin and dopamine.

Hiking Trip

Adventure seekers, rejoice! The physical and mental benefits of hiking are numerous. Physically, hiking serves to lower your risk of heart disease, improve your blood pressure and blood sugar levels, boost bone density, build strength in your glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, and the muscles in your hips and lower legs, and strengthen your core.

Mentally, a recent study comparing two groups of people– one who hiked through a nature environment for 90 minutes and another who walked in an urban environment for the same time–  found that hiking in nature decreased negative, obsessive thoughts about the self. The nature group also had lessened neural activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortex, which is affiliated with mental illness.

As we shared in a previous post, nature therapy can be one of the best ways to increase endorphins to offset depression. Moving the body is a great way to release energy otherwise directed towards anxiety.

Bringing it all together

If yoga, a spa weekend, or hiking aren’t your thing, don’t worry! There are plenty of other wellness getaway ideas to explore such as cross-country or downhill ski trips, cycling trips, nature retreats and more. Remember, the goal of a wellness retreat is to do something that replenishes your physical, mental, and spiritual self.  What idea or destination sounds good to you?
